The mission of the Young Adult ministry is to reach out to young adults, sharing their lives on a daily basis in order to grow closer to God as well as to each other.
10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Romans 12:10 (NIV)
9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:9-10 (NIV)
The young adults are devoted to building each other up in a safe, encouraging environment led by Biblical truths as revealed by the Holy Spirit. We want to provide an open and honest place to share God's work in our lives, no matter where we may be.
24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV)
"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters." 1 John 3:16
A missionary is someone who tells others about Jesus. Typically we assume to be a missionary we have to GO somewhere far away or out of our comfort zone. But in reality, if we are God's children we are all missionaries all the time! As stated in the Scripture above, we must love as Christ loved us. Because, what greater need is out there than people needing to be loved? Yes, there are those who are sick, poor, hungry, etc., but in order to fulfill those needs we first have to have the love of Christ within us. We must set ourselves aside and love one another; a love so unconditional that people will start asking where we got this love.
For the last two years, our church has been going on an annual trip to minister to the needs of the people in San Luis, Mexico. We drive a large caravan of people from the Northwest through California and Arizona to reach our destination, and then stay on the church campgrounds for approximately four days. During that time we walk the streets, pray for people and their families, host a children's Vacation Bible School and a women's craft class, and our biggest project of all is building two houses! This ministry to go to San Luis, Mexico has changed the lives of our youth group immensely. The first year we took two youth, the second we took six, and this year we're taking seven. The numbers continue to increase and more young people are learning what sharing God's love truly feels like. Doing a selfless act for people we do not know. But what we do know is that some of these people have never found the hope that is Christ Jesus. So, each year that we go we spread His light as much as we can in those four days and we all come back shining a little brighter.
We are always looking for new ways to serve our own community (the Portland area) as well. So, if you are reading this and there is a need you would like to share with us, our hearts and minds are open.
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20
Holgate Baptist Church plans and organizes teams for special events and activities to bring people together so that we might show the love of Christ through serving others. By reaching out to our community, we discover their needs and meet them where they are.
"We must take our eyes off of ourselves to see the needs of others."
Some of the events and activities that we have throughout the year are:
- Movie Nights
- Community & Church Wide Breakfasts
Harvest Festival (October 31)
- Vacation Bible School
Please call the church at (503) 761-4554 for information on scheduled activities or view the calendar of events on this Website.
The Builder (Senior) Adult Sunday School class meets in two separate, co-ed groups that members participate in. The class was developed for adults 60+.
As with most of the Sunday School classes at HBC, the study materials focus on a topic, such as leadership, living a godly life, etc., that is based on Scripture. The material is discussed, questions are asked, and we learn how to apply the lessons to our individual and church lives.
Anyone 50 or older is welcome to participate in monthly outings to places such as the Oregon Gardens, beach, Mt. Hood, cherry festival in The Dalles, apple picking at Hood River in the fall, and many other journeys.
There is also a monthly senior lunch at a local restaurant. Recently, the group had lunch at one of the popular food cart areas, which was a fun diversion from a traditional restaurant.
Women's Ministry purpose statement: "Our purpose is to partner with other ministries of Holgate Baptist Church to fulfill Christ's Great Commission to 'go and make disciples' by clearly and conscientiously bringing others to a faith relationship in Jesus Christ, nurturing growth in that personal relationship, and promoting love, friendship, and ministry through worship, Bible study, and prayer."
The Women's Ministry actively support Sanctity of Human Life ministries, summer camps, Vacation Bible School, mission trips, and Sunday School (Bible study) outreach.
We also offer a monthly social activity such as lunch at a local restaurant, Christmas Ornament Exchange, and an annual overnight retreat.
